This aritcle applies to SimpleSync v4. For SimpleSync v5 refer to SimpleSync v5 licensing for on the fly Disaster Recovery
For information on basic SimpleSync licensing, refer to the KB article How is SimpleSync Licensed. Included in basic licensing is the ability to request a Key Change in order to swap one IP for another, or to change the hostname (serial number) of your SimpleSync server. Key Change requests take a few days to turn around.
On the Fly Disaster Recovery would require the purchase of additional licensing to cover all potential IPs and SimpleSync servers:
As an example, let’s say you are licensed for one installation of SimpleSync and 6 directories (IPs) to sync.
At any one time, you may run one SimpleSync installation and be able to create and run syncs between your 6 licensed directories (IPs). If you have 6 IPs that you will be syncing to on an ongoing basis, then what you have is licensing for that one environment without the ability to do an on the fly fail over. If the need arose to change one IP for another, you would need to send in a Key Change Request. Key Change requests during regular business hours are generally pretty quick, however not immediate.
If you want real time IP fail over capability, you’d want to own twice the IPs and you’d have to provide the IPs of those secondary servers. In doing so, the license key will include both your production and alternate IPs. So if the need arose to sync to the alternate, you could do so without delay.
In this example, you own one copy of the SimpleSync installation. So if the SimpleSync server became unavailable, you’d have to send a Key Change Request to have your key changed to allow you to run SimpleSync on an alternate server.
If you want real time SimpleSync server fail over capability, you’d have to purchase a 2nd copy of the SimpleSync software. In doing so, your license key would include both SimpleSync servers. So if the need arose to run SimpleSync from the alternate location, you could do so without delay.
Note: To assist in the fail over of the SimpleSync server itself, you should do a regular back of the SimpleSync installation directory (i.e. \SimpleSync-v4) and copy this to your secondary SimpleSync server (or have it readily available to be copied). This backup contains the complete connection configuration information. It may need to be adjusted on your secondary if the IPs of target addresses are changed at the same time.
